A new report is paving the way for copper mines to achieve net zero emissions — this report, titled Ventilation and Emission Reporting, is the latest roadmap in a series aimed at steering the copper mining industry towards sustainability.
It follows previous roadmaps that addressed water management, materials movement, and mineral processing.
The report is the result of a collaborative effort involving the resources sector, government bodies, universities, and the mining technology industry.
It outlines innovative strategies to help the copper industry adopt more sustainable mining practices, emphasising the crucial role of ventilation in underground mines and the challenges associated with reducing site emissions.
Key themes covered in the report include ventilation system design, thermal management, air quality control, and emission monitoring.
It also provides detailed guides on innovation and technology, offering various pathways for companies to enhance their emission reporting and ventilation practices.
One of the key messages of the report is the importance of innovation in driving change within the industry.
John Fennell, from the International Copper Association Australia, highlighted the report’s focus on identifying systemic barriers, challenging traditional methodologies, and promoting collaboration to foster real change.
The report acknowledges that each copper producer will have a unique pathway to decarbonisation, but emphasises the benefits of collective action.
“The new report identifies systemic barriers in the industry, challenges traditional methodologies, and fosters a culture of collaboration and knowledge exchange to foster real change.”
Supported by leading industry players such as Glencore, Newmont, and Evolution Mining, Ventilation and Emission Reporting is part of the broader ICAA Roadmap to Zero Project — which aims to create zero-emissions copper mines through collaboration between the mining industry, government, METs, academics, and scientists.
The report’s findings underscore the industry’s commitment to sustainability and the adoption of innovative solutions to reduce its environmental impact.
By addressing key challenges related to ventilation and emissions reporting, the copper mining industry is taking significant steps towards achieving net zero emissions.
