The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has announced the successful completion of its first Minerals Industry Experience (MiEX) Program, marking a significant step in addressing the STEM talent shortage in Australia’s minerals industry.
The two-week immersive program, which concluded recently, provided first-year university students with hands-on exposure to the minerals industry.
Participants engaged in interactive sessions covering mining fundamentals, sustainability, innovation, processing, and environmental management.
The program also included on-site experiences at leading mining operations and networking events with industry professionals.
Tania Constable, Chief Executive Officer of the MCA, highlighted the program’s success in attracting “mining-curious” STEM students early in their academic careers.
The initiative showcased opportunities in high-demand fields such as geoscience, mining engineering, and environmental sciences.
The inaugural MiEX Program demonstrated strong interest from students, with over 500 applications received.
A cohort of 70 participants was selected across hubs in Perth, Brisbane, and Adelaide, achieving an impressive 60 per cent female participation rate.
The program was delivered through partnerships with major mining companies including BHP, Peabody Energy, and Rio Tinto, as well as education and technology partners AusIMM and Cahoot.
It targeted students from universities such as Curtin University, the University of Western Australia, the University of Queensland, Central Queensland University, and the University of Adelaide.
As the MiEX Program concludes its first year, the MCA has expressed gratitude to the students, universities, and industry partners involved.
Looking ahead, the council plans to expand the initiative to further strengthen the Australian minerals sector’s workforce.
This innovative program represents a significant step towards building a resilient and diverse workforce for Australia’s minerals industry, combining practical experience with cutting-edge education to ensure the sector remains at the forefront of innovation and sustainability.
