Victoria has appointed experienced barrister and mediator Karen Streckfuss as the state’s new Mining Warden for a three-year term.
The Mining Warden plays a critical role in Victoria’s mining framework, tasked with investigating and helping resolve disputes through mediation, conciliation and arbitration.
The position also carries advisory responsibilities, including making recommendations to the Minister for Energy and Resources on matters arising from disputes.
Mining-related disagreements can arise between a range of stakeholders, including licence holders, landholders and community members.
These disputes often involve complex issues such as land access, licence boundaries, and competing land use interests.
The Mining Warden provides an independent avenue for parties to address these concerns without immediately resorting to litigation.
Streckfuss brings extensive legal and dispute resolution expertise to the role.
She is an accredited mediator with significant experience handling mediations and conciliations, including cases involving sensitive or high-stakes matters.
Her background includes serving on the Mediators List for several courts and tribunals, reflecting her recognised capability in facilitating fair outcomes.
In addition to her mediation credentials, Streckfuss is a long-standing member of the Victorian Bar and has practised as a barrister for 27 years.
Her legal career also includes prior experience as a solicitor, giving her a comprehensive understanding of the legal system from multiple perspectives.
Her appointment comes at a time when effective dispute resolution is increasingly important in balancing resource development with community expectations and landholder rights.
By focusing on early intervention and negotiated outcomes, the Mining Warden role aims to reduce conflict escalation and support more collaborative solutions.
“If parties can agree on a resolution, they are generally going to have more buy-in than if a solution is imposed on them,” said Streckfess.
Streckfuss emphasised the value of mediation in fostering durable agreements that reflect the interests of all parties involved.
This approach aligns with broader efforts across the sector to prioritise engagement and transparency.
“I am looking forward to helping people to resolve their disputes in my role as Mining Warden,” said Streckfess.
Her appointment is expected to strengthen the state’s dispute resolution processes, offering stakeholders a trusted and experienced figure to guide negotiations and facilitate outcomes.
With her combination of legal expertise and mediation experience, Streckfuss is well-positioned to navigate the complexities of mining-related conflicts and contribute to more constructive engagement across the sector.
