Deep Yellow Ltd. has reached a transmission power supply agreement with state-owned utility Namibia Power Corp. Ltd. (NamPower) for its Tumas uranium project in Namibia, another step in advancing the project alongside water supply and development agreements.
Under the agreement, the Tumas project will be connected to the Namibian regional grid through a purpose-build 22 km 220 kV power line with capacity of 4 MVA.
Deep Yellow will be responsible for designing and building the switching yard and substation infrastructure, which will be handed over to NamPower after commissioning.
Power supply to the mine will be supplemented by an on-site solar farm installed and operated by an independent power producer.
The solar farm is designed to supply up to the full project’s electrical power demand during daylight hours, accounting for at least 30 per cent of the total electrical power required for the operation.
Deep Yellow is still negotiating with a preferred solar supplier, but the design of the grid connection has commenced.
Deep Yellow acting CEO Craig Barnes said: “The execution of the power supply agreement with NamPower is another important step in advancing our preparation for the construction of the Tumas project.
“Our strategy for the development of Tumas is unchanged; we will continue with the orderly derisking of the project and ensure we are ready to reach FID when we are satisfied that the uranium market supports development of a greenfield project like Tumas.”
Meanwhile, negotiations over water supply are progressing. Deep Yellow has received a draft water supply agreement and draft development agreement from Namibia Water Corp. Ltd. (NamWater), which will supply fresh water from the Swakopmund Reservoir.
Deep Yellow said detailed engineering for Tumas is now more than 60 per cent complete, and more than 70 per cent of major process plant equipment has been tendered.
Early works at the site are also advancing. The bulk earthworks for Tumas are currently 24 per cent complete and are expected to be completed in March 2026.
