Pembroke Resources’ $1 billion Olive Downs steelmaking coal mine has officially opened in the coal-rich Bowen Basin region of central Queensland.
The Olive Downs project, a significant infrastructure development, includes a coal handling and preparation plant, rail spur, train load-out facility, conveyor systems, and access roads.
The Pembroke Olive Downs Complex’s transmission line, a crucial component of the project, was awarded to The Betta Group by Yurika, a subsidiary of Energy Queensland.
This major infrastructure project was essential to provide the electrification and connectivity required to power and run the complex.
Queensland Resources Minister, Scott Stewart, emphasised the new development’s role in supporting Queensland’s transition to clean energy.
He highlighted the importance of the project in meeting the state’s energy needs while also contributing to the broader goal of a sustainable future.
The steelmaking coal development is of significant scale and size with up to 80 years of mine life and will deliver high quality coking coal and PCI products to key markets including Japan, South Korea and India.
Based on Pembroke’s forecasts of coking coal price and production rates, over its mine life, the project has the potential to generate as much as A$10.2 billion in royalties for the Queensland government
