Battery Age Minerals (BM8) is progressing on initiatives to strengthen its position in the global germanium supply chain.
BM8 secured a new partnership with NTUitive, the innovation arm of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. As part of the new partnership, BM8 has an exclusive licence to evaluate six germanium-related inventions. These technologies focus on advanced semiconductor fabrication, including epitaxial growth and strain management, processes critical for integrating germanium into high-performance computing and AI infrastructure.
By securing a high-level technology evaluation licence and advancing sustainable processing research, BM8 aims to bridge the gap between its raw mineral assets and the exacting requirements of the semiconductor and optoelectronics industries.
BM8 intends to create a specification-to-processing feedback loop. This will allow the company to refine the purity and consistency of its mineral output to meet the precise qualification-driven standards of end-users in the fibre-optic and sensing markets.
Parallel to the technology evaluation, BM8 is progressing a workstream focused on low-impact processing. This initiative seeks to reduce the chemical intensity and energy consumption of germanium production. As geopolitical tensions and export restrictions continue to squeeze global supply, BM8 is positioning itself as a cleaner, Western-aligned alternative to traditional producers.
The company’s strategy is underpinned by two premier germanium projects located in stable, Tier-1 mining jurisdictions. Its Bleiberg-Hochobir project in Austria recently completed Phase 1 drilling. Historically, this site was one of the world’s largest germanium producers, with reported concentrate grades reaching 1,500 grams per tonne of germanium.
The company’s Apex project in Utah, US is centred around the world’s first primary germanium-gallium mine, which boasts historic grades as high as 7,000 g/t Ge.
In combination, these initiatives are meant to improve the company’s mine-to-market readiness and support engagement with customers and partners seeking secure germanium supply.
