Mining giant Glencore injected A$19.3 billion into the Australian economy in 2025, throwing a lifeline to homegrown businesses amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
According to an annual economic contribution report compiled by PwC, Glencore backed 16,827 jobs, comprising 12,294 direct employees and 4,533 contractors, across its 16 operational mines and seven metals processing facilities spanning four states and territories.
A major slice of the financial contribution went directly to local industry, with Glencore spending AU$14.2 billion on domestic suppliers and supporting 6,446 Australian-based businesses.
This commercial spend reached 68 per cent of all local government areas nationwide, flowing from regional hubs like the Hunter Valley and the WA Goldfields into major capital cities.
Nick Talintyre, Finance Lead for Glencore in Australia, said the results highlight the mining sector’s enduring strength and its flow-on effects for everyday Australians.
“From local cafes, cleaners and trades to major equipment, transport and mining services providers, we gratefully acknowledge the thousands of people, businesses and communities that help keep Australia’s resources sector operating,” Talintyre said.
“We believe mining matters for every Australian. While our operations are in the regions, our contribution extends beyond these and into the cities: from the Hunter Valley, Mount Isa, Emerald, Borroloola and the WA Goldfields, through to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.”
The company also paid AU$2.4 billion in taxes, royalties, and rates to various levels of government, alongside AU$2.7 billion in wages.
The report highlighted Glencore’s evolving role in safeguarding Australia’s sovereign manufacturing capabilities. Following the closure of its underground Mount Isa Copper Operations in July 2025, Glencore pivoted to strengthen its local processing assets through collaborative partnerships.
The company spent AU$2.9 billion procuring copper concentrate from domestic third parties, keeping its Mount Isa smelter and Townsville refinery active.
By collaborating with BHP and several junior-to-mid-tier miners, Glencore provides a vital domestic processing option that prevents local operators from being forced to export raw copper concentrate overseas.
Copper remains one of five strategic minerals designated by the federal government for national economic security.
