BHP and Polish copper major KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to evaluate joint growth opportunities and share technical expertise across the global resources sector.
The framework establishes a structure for both companies to explore collaborative avenues, exchange operational best practices, and assess prospective projects spanning exploration to development-stage assets.
The agreement builds upon an established working relationship between the two miners, who already partner on copper operations in Chile.
Under the new arrangement, the companies will look beyond existing operational locations to identify mutual value creation globally.
BHP CEO Brandon Craig noted the importance of alliances in meeting the rising global demand for future-facing commodities.
“This agreement builds on the strong partnership that we have had in place for some time to enhance our copper operations in Chile,” Craig said.
“The world will need more copper, driven by traditional economic growth, the energy transition, and digital investments. We are focused on unlocking high returning growth through innovative partnerships like this one.”
KGHM, the EU’s largest mined copper producer and the world’s second-largest silver producer, operates integrated mining and metallurgical assets in Poland alongside international sites in Chile, Canada, and the US.
Remigiusz Paszkiewicz, President of the Management Board at KGHM, noted that the structured framework enables both organisations to align operational strengths and examine prospective synergies.
Eliza Zeidler, Secretary of State at Poland’s Ministry of State Assets, welcomed the deal as confirmation of KGHM’s growing global profile, pointing to the international expansion as a driver for embedding Polish technological expertise into global supply chains.
The partnership comes as global miners increasingly seek operational synergies, joint venture opportunities, and technological cooperation to secure the critical minerals required for global decarbonisation and digital infrastructure growth.
“We believe the mining industry benefits from open dialogue and the exchange of experience among companies operating across different regions and jurisdictions,” said Anna Sobieraj-Kozakiewicz, Vice President of the Management Board at KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.
