Australian Vanadium Ltd. (AVL) has signed a memorandum of understanding with US-based advanced battery developer Tyfast Energy Corp. to evaluate its Australian vanadium oxide products for use in fast-charging, heavy-duty batteries.
The collaboration establishes a pathway to qualify AVL’s planned vanadium oxide products for Tyfast’s proprietary lithium vanadium oxide (LVO) anode technology, while exploring potential future commercial supply and offtake arrangements.
Tyfast is developing LVO-based lithium-ion batteries tailored for demanding environments where rapid charging, long cycle life, and high energy density are essential, including mining equipment, heavy trucking, construction, and military applications.
The technology is being evaluated across several US defence programs, including ground combat vehicles, military aviation, directed-energy systems, and extreme-cold naval operations.
AVL CEO Graham Arvidson said the partnership offers an opportunity to enter an emerging market for vanadium alongside the company’s existing focus on vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) and steel manufacturing.
“For AVL, the opportunity is broader than a potential new source of vanadium demand,” Arvidson said.
“We see strategic alignment between Australian critical minerals, Tyfast’s US-developed battery technology and the increasing focus on secure and resilient supply chains across Australia, the United States and other markets seeking supply chain diversification.”
Under the framework, AVL and Tyfast will exchange technical data, evaluate product specifications, such as vanadium pentoxide, and conduct bench and pilot-scale testing on material samples.
The companies will also investigate potential government funding opportunities across Australia, the US, and allied nations to support critical minerals and defence technology supply chains.
Tyfast CEO GJ la O’ noted that heavy-duty electrification requires a distinct performance profile capable of handling intense duty cycles.
“Working with AVL gives us a pathway to evaluate Australian vanadium as we move our LVO technology toward larger-scale validation, pilot programs and commercial applications,” la O’ said.
