Greatland Resources has rapidly emerged as one of Australia’s leading gold and copper producers, with its Telfer operation now at the centre of the company’s growth strategy.
Acquired in December 2024, Telfer ranks among the country’s largest processing centres, combining open-pit and underground mining on a significant scale.
The site has the capacity to process up to 20 million tonnes of ore each year and employs more than 1,500 people, making it central to Greatland’s ambition to build a long-life mining business.
Since taking ownership, the company has delivered strong operational results, increasing open-pit output by more than 50 per cent while also improving recovery rates.
Greatland attributes these gains to smarter mine planning, greater operational efficiency, and continued investment in the right equipment for the job.
A key focus going forward is the expansion of the West Dome open pit and the delivery of future cutbacks, work that requires reliable, high-performance loading equipment.
That need ultimately led Greatland to invest in its first Cat Hydraulic Mining Shovel, the Cat 6060.
Cat 6060 Hydraulic Mining Shovel
For Greatland, bringing the Cat 6060 Hydraulic Mining Shovel onto site was about more than adding a new piece of equipment.
It marked the start of a broader partnership with WesTrac.
With production ramping up at Telfer, Greatland needed a loading solution that could keep pace, along with a partner capable of delivering it.
From the outset, the focus was on understanding the operation’s requirements, moving quickly, and getting the machine into productive work.
Transporting a 600-tonne-class hydraulic mining shovel to a remote site like Telfer is a major undertaking.
The process required detailed planning, carefully coordinated logistics, and a three-week on-site assembly.
Despite these challenges, WesTrac Mining Business Manager Ben Morris said the outcome was seamless.
It is this kind of partnership approach, built on close coordination and a shared focus on outcomes, that has helped keep operations running smoothly and performance on track at Telfer.
The Cat 6060 Hydraulic Mining Shovel is a next-generation machine engineered for productivity, reliability and efficiency in large-scale mining operations.
Its design is built to handle high-volume material movement while standing up to demanding site conditions.
For Greatland, the shovel proved a natural fit for Telfer’s scale and rugged operating environment.
Since the machine was commissioned, Greatland Superintendent Alan McGuinniss said the results have been immediate, with the equipment already contributing to the productivity gains the operation has been chasing.
As Greatland continues to expand the West Dome open pit and progress its broader plans for Telfer, the addition of the Cat 6060 and the growing relationship with WesTrac are expected to play an important role in supporting the site’s long-term performance and output targets.
