Sandvik Mining has unveiled its AutoMine Surface Drilling Training Simulator, a new digital tool designed to strengthen operator skills and improve the efficiency of automated drilling processes in surface mining.
The simulator is fully compatible with Sandvik’s i-series surface drill rigs and offers what the company calls a “realistic, safe and cost-effective” training environment.
It allows trainees to operate up to three rigs of the same type simultaneously, focusing on critical functions such as path planning, autonomous production cycle management, and real-time progress monitoring.
To enhance immersion, the simulator replicates the actual visual interface of AutoMine operations, including authentic camera views and realistic rig pedals and controls.
Dedicated virtual modules also guide operators through the AutoMine safety system.
Packaged in a compact, portable case, the simulator is designed for rapid setup and easy relocation, enabling consistent training across mine sites worldwide.
The stand-alone unit requires no external network connection and incorporates components taken from Sandvik’s existing training platforms.
By moving significant portions of training into a virtual setting, the system not only reduces fuel use, equipment wear, and carbon emissions, but also maintains a high standard of operator preparation.
Sandvik emphasises the system’s global applicability, noting its compatibility with both AutoMine Universal Operator Stations and rig-specific stations.
Its structured program covers operational controls, diagnostics, and troubleshooting to ensure operators and technicians develop comprehensive system knowledge.
Anu Pyysalo, Sandvik Mining’s head of Learning Solutions Automation, highlighted the importance of the tool in bridging the gap between theory and practice.
“The AutoMine Surface Drilling Training Simulator bridges the gap from classroom learning to operational readiness by giving operators an immersive, hands-on environment to practice, make mistakes and refine their skills before working in a live mine,” Pyysalo said.
“This approach accelerates learning, builds confidence and ensures that operators are fully prepared to manage complex automated systems safely and effectively.”
The launch follows Sandvik’s introduction in May of the AutoMine Surface Fleet, a capability that allows management of more than 15 surface i-series drill rigs from a connected location, further strengthening the company’s suite of digital automation tools for mining operations.
