AVESS Energy will submit a stage one expression of interest for the Western Australian government’s vanadium battery energy storage (VBESS) project in Kalgoorlie.
AVESS’ submission will be delivered by a consortium of Western Australian companies including vanadium producer Atlantic Vanadium Pty Ltd., AVESS and Lycopodium Ltd., a design and project delivery engineer.
The consortium brings together strong local capability across the state’s critical minerals chain. AVESS will also leverage its ownership of KORID Energy Co., Ltd.’s world-class 25kW stack technology, as well as the capabilities of its consortium partners Atlantic Vanadium and Lycopodium.
AVESS Managing Director Young Yu said: “The Kalgoorlie VBESS is a significant opportunity to deliver a locally manufactured VFB at scale. AVESS is well-placed to deliver a compelling, homegrown VFB solution, backed by our world-class stack technology and the expertise of our consortium partners.
The Kalgoorlie VBESS project is backed by an AU$150 million commitment from the Western Australian government and seeks to install the largest of its kind VBESS in Australia in 2029.
The project aims to boost energy resilience, support long-duration storage solutions, and catalyse Western Australia’s vanadium and battery manufacturing industries.
The stage one expression of interest closes on January 30, 2026. Two business case assessments are expected to commence before the second quarter of 2026, with a preferred proponent selected in the second half of the year.
