CEEC International has revealed the winners of the prestigious 2023 CEEC Medal, recognising outstanding achievements in Technical Research and Operations & Design within the mining industry.
The annual award celebrates contributions that improve energy efficiency, water management, and emissions reductions in mineral processing globally.
This year’s competition saw a record number of nominations, leading to the awarding of two High Commendations in each category due to the exceptional quality of submissions.
The Technical Research Medal was awarded to a team led by Malcolm Powell for their paper titled “Can We Shift to A New Paradigm of Flexibility in Mining and Processing to Build Mines Powered Exclusively by The Variable Input of Renewables?”
The winning team includes researchers from the Sustainable Minerals Institute at the University of Queensland and several other organisations.
In the Operations & Design category, the medal went to a team led by Ivka Lovatt for their work on “Trade-Off Realities in HPGR vs. SAG Milling — A Practical Comparison of Tropicana and Gruyere Comminution Circuits”.
This project involved collaboration between Orway Mineral Consultants, Gold Fields, and AngloGold Ashanti Australia.
High Commendations in the Technical Research category were awarded to teams led by Sherwin Morgan and Robert McIvor for their respective studies on copper recovery and fine high-pressure grinding.
In the Operations & Design category, teams led by Priscila Esteves and Dean David received High Commendations for their work on sensor-based sorting and dry VRM milling.
Janine Herzig, Executive President of CEEC International, praised the winners for their innovative contributions to sustainability in the mining industry.
Grant Ballantyne, Chair of the Medal Evaluation Committee, highlighted the competitive nature of this year’s selection process and commended all nominees for their hard work.
The CEEC Medal, established in 2012, aims to raise awareness of comminution research findings and alternative strategies to achieve lower processing costs and increased shareholder value through improved practices.
As the 2023 awards conclude, CEEC International has announced that nominations for the 2024 CEEC Medal are now open, encouraging continued excellence in the resources sector.
