Former Queensland mine and quarry workers in the Toowoomba region will have access to free lung health screenings as the HEART5 mobile health unit makes its debut visit to the area.
The state-of-the-art B-double truck, equipped with advanced medical screening technology, will be stationed at Queens Park from August 26 to 27, 2024.
The HEART5 unit, operated by Heart of Australia in collaboration with Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ), offers a range of tests designed to detect mine dust lung diseases. These screenings include:
- Examination by an RSHQ-approved doctor
- Chest X-ray
- Lung function test via spirometry
- CT scan (if necessary)
Patrick Jensen, RSHQ’s Director of Health Strategy and Compliance, emphasises the significance of these screenings, particularly for former workers who may be unaware of potential health issues.
“Occupational lung diseases can take a decade or more to develop,” Jensen explains.
“Many former workers may not have symptoms or be aware they have a disease.”
Free health assessments are available to former Queensland mine and quarry workers who meet the following criteria:
- At least 3 years of total work experience in coal mines, mineral mines, or quarries
- A minimum of 6 months of work experience in Queensland
- Permanent cessation of work in the mining or quarrying industry
- At least 5 years since the most recent assessment, unless otherwise recommended by a doctor
Jensen encourages eligible individuals to take advantage of this opportunity, stating, “Come forward and get tested because there could be treatment available, and you may be entitled to compensation. It costs you nothing, just time.”
The HEART5 mobile health unit represents a significant advancement in providing accessible healthcare to former mine and quarry workers in regional and remote areas of Queensland.
This initiative aligns with the broader mission of Heart of Australia to bridge the healthcare gap for rural and remote Australians.
