Victoria’s resource regulator has issued an infringement notice to Victory Minerals for failing to report an incident after a fire occurred at its mine in Mount Clear.
Resources Victoria claimed that Victory Minerals failed to notify the regulator of the incident for more than two days.
Organisations with mineral licences are required to report such incidents to the Chief Inspector as soon as possible.
Reportable incidents include fires, explosions, the failure of slopes or tailings dams, airborne rock from blasting, spillage of harmful substances and breaches of licence or work authority conditions.
Resources Victoria Chief Inspector Renee Palmer said it is important for site operators to provide accurate and timely reporting of incidents to ensure that risks can be identified and promptly addressed.
“Any unexpected event linked to site activities that is likely to cause significant harm to individuals, the environment or operations at the site must be reported to Resources Victoria.”
Privately owned Victory Minerals operates a high-grade underground mine at Mount Clear.
The company took ownership of Ballarat Gold mine in 2023, focusing on high-grade underground gold extraction using modern mining techniques.
