MMG Limited has advised that two people employed through their contractor company Barminco were reported missing on the morning of Wednesday 15 February 2023, following an incident at the Dugald River mine in Queensland.
The site’s emergency team has been activated and is working alongside Barminco, emergency services, and the Queensland Mines Inspectorate, with the rescue operation currently underway.
Operations at the site have been suspended and MMG together with Barminco are working in close coordination to provide support to all Dugald River people.
Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) Queensland Secretary Stacey Shinnerl said the AWU was aware there had been an incident at the Dugald River underground zinc mine northwest of Cloncurry.
She said: “We are advised that the Queensland government have mine safety inspectors on site gathering information, but at this stage it appears two miners are unaccounted for.
“We are in constant touch with our members both on and off site.
“Out of respect to the friends and family of those involved, the AWU will not be making further comments until we have received reports from the Inspectorate.
“This is obviously a trying time for workers at the Dugald River mine and our thoughts are with them and their friends and family.
“We are hoping for a positive outcome for all.”
