The Western Australian government is investing more than AU$900,000 to support the next generation of resources sector researchers, opening applications for five postgraduate scholarships for 2027.
Administered by the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA), the PhD scholarships aim to tackle critical challenges facing the state’s resource industry. Key research streams will focus on precision and low-impact mining, net-zero emissions, green steel technologies, critical minerals, and alternative uses for mine waste and tailings.
To foster greater diversity across the sector, two of the five positions are specifically reserved for women undertaking minerals research.
The funding package includes one prestigious MRIWA Odwyn Jones PhD Scholarship focused on improving mining safety and environmental outcomes, alongside two general MRIWA PhD Scholarships and two dedicated MRIWA PhD Scholarships for Women across priority decarbonisation areas.
Each successful candidate will receive more than AU$45,000 annually for up to 3.5 years, complemented by a yearly research and travel allowance exceeding AU$6,000.
Recipients will also gain access to specialised professional development, training, and industry networking opportunities through MRIWA’s Education and Workforce Development program.
Mines, Petroleum and Exploration Minister Daniel Pastorelli said that investing in local innovation is crucial to maintaining the state’s standing as a global mining leader.
“Western Australia is a global resources powerhouse, and staying at the forefront means continuing to invest in the people and ideas that will shape the industry’s future,” Pastorelli said.
“These scholarships will give some of our brightest researchers the opportunity to tackle real-world challenges facing our resources sector – from improving safety and productivity to reducing emissions and making better use of mining waste.”
Pastorelli added that backing local research ensures Western Australia retains the vital expertise needed to keep the domestic resources sector competitive on the world stage. Applications for the 2027 intake close on Monday, 2 November 2026.
