The Queensland government has granted mining leases for a significant phosphate mine in northwest Queensland, marking a major step forward for the region’s economy.
North West Phosphate’s Paradise South complex, located 130 kilometres northwest of Mount Isa, has been given approval, with expectations to create substantial employment opportunities and boost the local economy.
The project is anticipated to generate 200 jobs during the construction phase and employ 245 workers once operational.
North West Phosphate has committed to utilising local services, providing a further economic boost to northwest Queensland.
Phosphorous, a key product of the mine, is essential for fertiliser production in agriculture and is also used in batteries and other technologies crucial for the world’s transition to a decarbonised economy.
Resources and Critical Minerals Minister Scott Stewart praised the project, stating: “The grant of the mining leases for this project northwest of Mount Isa is a vote of confidence from not just this government but from companies like North West Phosphate.
“Paradise South will create 445 good local jobs for the region and confirms the North West Mineral Province will continue to be a key driver in Queensland’s economy.”
Northwest Phosphate Executive Chairman John Cotter expressed gratitude for the government’s support, stating: “We have worked very closely with the state government in bringing this very difficult and complex project to fruition in the North West and we are excited to reach this significant milestone for our Paradise South project.
“A big thank you to the Queensland government for the support they have provided us to date and for their ongoing commitment to the North West Region — keeping and growing jobs in the North West is a priority for all of us.”
The project, which has been in discussion for decades, is now set to become a reality due to its cutting-edge design and world-class technology, according to Cotter.
The development of the Paradise South project underscores Queensland’s commitment to supporting strategic mineral projects and driving economic growth in regional areas.
