Karara Mining Limited is advancing plans to revise its Karara Iron Ore Mine, situated approximately 320 kilometres north-northeast of Perth in Western Australia’s Midwest region.
The proposed revision aims to support a new Life of Mine strategy, extending operational life from about 25 years to approximately 40 years.
This extension is facilitated by an expanded development envelope and increased ground disturbance.
The revised proposal outlines additional ground disturbance of 1,522 hectares, bringing the total disturbance area to no more than 5,040 hectares, within a revised development envelope of 13,557 hectares.
Key components of the revision include the extension of the tailings storage facility and waste rock landform, and the incorporation of areas previously approved under the Mungada Iron Ore Project (MIOP) as well as infrastructure maintenance zones covered under clearing permits managed under Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986.
These areas will continue to support ongoing Karara operations.
Karara is already recognised as the largest iron ore mining operation in the Midwest, producing premium magnetite concentrate.
The expansion is expected not only to extend the operational lifespan of the mine but also to enhance economic benefits such as royalties, taxes, and employment opportunities in the region.
Furthermore, Karara Mining has committed to environmental management, including offset agreements with government departments to rehabilitate and conserve surrounding lands.
The Environmental Protection Authority of Western Australia (EPA WA) currently has the revision under assessment, with a request for more information published as of August 4, 2025.
This assessment process follows previous submissions and aims to ensure the project meets environmental and regulatory standards before approval for the expanded mine life and footprint is granted.
This development reflects Karara Mining Limited’s strategy to leverage existing assets while maintaining a commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement in the Mid West region of Western Australia.
