Mineral Resources has broken ground at its Lamb Creek iron ore project in Pilbara, Western Australia.
Construction is already underway, with Mineral Resources’ in-house engineering and construction teams having commenced construction of the mine and supporting infrastructure, including a 16-kilometre haul road and crushing plant.
Lamb Creek is projected to produce 7.5 million tonnes per annum and is expected to extend the Pilbara hub’s current production profile by more than five years.
Lamb Creek is located 50 kilometres from the Iron Valle Mine, a location that will allow Mineral Resources to blend ore from both sites before hauling to Utah Point for export through the port of Port Hedland.
Mineral Resources CEO for iron ore Chris Soccio said Lamb Creek would extend the company’s operations in the Pilbara.
“Developing Lamb Creek supports our five-year outlook for the Pilbara Hub, which plays an important role in our iron ore portfolio,” Soccio said.
“I extend my thanks to the countless Mineral Resources staff who have played a role in bringing Lamb Creek to life – for many, this project has taken years of hard work, approvals and planning.”
The start of Lamb Creek also marks the transition away from the current Wonmunna iron ore operation.
The company will transfer all Wonmunna-based staff to Lamb Creek once operational. Mineral Resources does not anticipate any impact on jobs.
In August, Mineral Resources released its mineral resources and ore statements for the Pilbara Hub, which sits at 161 million tonnes at 57 per cent iron ore (Fe) and ore reserves at 51 million tonnes at 57.5 Fe.
The hub has a production guidance of 9-10 million tonnes per annum for fiscal 2026.
