FINLAND — Prospech Limited (ASX:PRS) has announced a significant milestone in its Korsnäs Rare Earth Elements (REE) Project, revealing an initial JORC 2012-compliant Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE).
This development positions Korsnäs as a potential key player in Europe’s critical minerals landscape.
The inaugural MRE for Korsnäs stands at 7.1 million tonnes, grading 1.08 per cent Total Rare Earth Oxides (TREO) with a cut-off grade of 0.5 per cent TREO.
This estimate is based on data from 46 mineralised domains, suggesting room for future consolidation and potential resource expansion.
Adjacent to the reported MRE, Prospech has identified an exploration target of 10 to 12 million tonnes at 1-1.2 per cent TREO, indicating significant upside potential pending further metallurgical work.
The Korsnäs Project aligns with the European Union’s critical minerals strategy, particularly the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) which came into force in May 2024.
The CRMA aims to reduce the EU’s dependence on external critical ore and metal suppliers, notably China, and improve the industrial sector’s resilience.
Jason Beckton, Managing Director of Prospech, highlighted the strategic significance of the project, stating: “This Inferred MRE at Korsnäs is a fantastic start and represents the EU’s newest REE resource.”
He added that the company is now focused on improving the quality and quantity of the resource, along with metallurgical information and initial mine permitting matters.
Prospech is actively working to enhance the project’s potential:
- Ongoing Exploration: An additional 681 assay results are pending, with further drilling planned to increase resource confidence and tonnage.
- Metallurgical Testing: Set to begin at GTK Mintec and the Oulu Mining School under the REMHub initiative, aligning with EU efforts to strengthen domestic critical raw material capabilities.
- Resource Expansion: The company anticipates further consolidation of mineralised domains, potentially enhancing resource quality and increasing tonnage.
- Additional Opportunities: Exploration will extend to untapped surrounding tenements and potential resources within the project’s tailings storage facility and Lanthanide concentrate stockpile.
The Korsnäs Project could play a crucial role in meeting the EU’s ambitious targets set out in the CRMA.
These include sourcing 10 per cent of the EU’s annual critical raw material consumption from domestic extraction and 25 per cent from recycling by 2030.
As demand for rare earth elements is forecast to soar six-fold in the decade to 2030, projects like Korsnäs are becoming increasingly vital to the EU’s strategic autonomy in critical raw materials.
With this development, Prospech Limited is positioning itself as a potential key player in the EU’s efforts to secure a sustainable and reliable supply of critical raw materials, essential for the region’s green energy transition and technological advancement.
