The mining industry faces universal workforce challenges across continents, according to Arjen De Bruin, Group CEO of OIM Consulting.
His research reveals critical insights into supervisory performance and organisational effectiveness in mining sectors across Africa, Australia, and the Americas.
Supervisory Performance Landscape
De Bruin’s extensive study of over 2,000 supervisors uncovered striking workforce dynamics. Notably, only 19 per cent of supervisors were deemed competent in their roles, with competency defined as achieving a moderate three out of five rating.
The research highlighted significant competency gaps, particularly in planning and organising, which emerged as the weakest area. Leadership and team development skills, along with analysis and problem-solving capabilities, also demonstrated substantial room for improvement.
Regional Variations in Supervisor Skills
Different regions demonstrated unique strengths. African and American supervisors exhibited strong social processing skills and safety proficiency, while Australian and North American supervisors excelled in technical capabilities and complex problem-solving.
Persistent Organisational Challenges
The study identified 10 universal mining workforce problems that transcend geographical boundaries. These challenges include missed daily productivity targets, lack of team engagement, ineffective leadership approaches, recurring safety issues, and high supervisor turnover.
Transformative Solutions
OIM Consulting recommends a multi-faceted approach to addressing these challenges. The strategy centres on targeted training programs, comprehensive on-ground coaching, and cultural realignment focused on organisational purpose and direction.
Key Insights
De Bruin emphasises that while challenges are universal, solutions require a nuanced, people-centred approach.
“Sustainable change starts with understanding and developing our people,” he notes.
The research underscores the critical role of supervisors, who lead approximately 80 per cent of the mining workforce and are fundamental to organisational success. By recognising shared challenges and implementing strategic interventions, mining organisations can transform their workforce performance and drive operational excellence.
