Komatsu has entered into a strategic partnership with Pronto, a developer of off-road autonomous haulage systems, to bring advanced autonomy solutions to quarry operations in North America.
The collaboration will introduce the Komatsu Smart Quarry Autonomous system, which integrates Pronto’s cutting-edge autonomous technology into haul trucks specifically designed for quarry applications.
This initiative aligns with Komatsu’s broader Smart Quarry platform, which focuses on digital innovation and operational efficiency in quarry sites.
Jason Anetsberger, senior director of Komatsu Customer Solutions, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating: “This collaboration with Pronto accelerates our vision of smart, automated quarry operations.
“We have decades of experience with autonomous haulage in large-scale mining.
“Now we are bringing that expertise to quarries of all sizes.
“It is a solution that helps drive productivity beyond what was previously possible and can support efforts to enhance safety by facilitating the removal of workers from areas of potential hazard.”
The autonomously equipped system is designed to be compatible with multiple original equipment manufacturers, offering quarry operators flexibility to retrofit existing Komatsu vehicles or purchase new trucks outfitted with Pronto’s self-driving technology.
This capability enables continuous, 24/7 mining operations with diminished dependence on human operators.
Key anticipated benefits of the partnership include increased operational safety by eliminating human drivers from hazardous quarry zones, improved consistency in haul cycles, enhanced fuel efficiency, and access to valuable operational insights through Komatsu’s Smart Quarry analytics platform.
Pronto’s autonomous systems leverage sophisticated artificial intelligence alongside a robust array of sensors to navigate and manage the complex quarry environment effectively.
This combination simplifies the adoption of autonomy for quarries of various sizes and operational scales.
Anthony Levandowski, CEO of Pronto, emphasised the transformational nature of the venture: “Partnering with an industry leader like Komatsu is about more than technology, it is about accelerating the future of heavy industry.
“Previously, the most advanced autonomy was reserved for the largest mines.
“Today, by combining Komatsu’s trusted hardware and vast support network with Pronto’s scalable, intelligent autonomous platform, we are fundamentally changing the game.
“We are enabling a future of enhanced safety and incredible productivity that is now accessible to quarries of all sizes.”
This partnership signals a significant step toward wider adoption of autonomous technology in quarry operations, promising to elevate productivity and safety standards across the North American quarry industry.
