Earth Resources Regulator ensures compliance at Keilor quarry

Earth Resources Regulator ensures compliance at Keilor quarry

The Earth Resources Regulator is taking proactive measures to ensure quarries in Victoria operate within their approvals, maintaining the balance between resource extraction and environmental protection.

Following investigations prompted by community complaints regarding stockpiles, dust, and truck movements, the state’s resources regulator, in collaboration with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and Hume City Council, issued a notice to a quarry operator at their Keilor site.

The notice mandates that the operator conducts activities following the site’s approved Work Plan, emphasising environmental protection and compliance.

Specifically, the notice requires the operator to prevent excessive stockpiling beyond what is necessary for site rehabilitation, as excess stockpiles can contribute to dust emissions and impact neighbouring properties.

To achieve this, the operator will conduct surveys to determine the required amount of material for rehabilitation.

Quarry materials such as sand, stone, clay, and gravel are vital for building infrastructure in Victoria, supporting the government’s significant investments in housing, schools, hospitals, and transport infrastructure.

With annual production forecasted to increase to over 100 million tonnes by 2050, maintaining confidence in the sector’s operations and regulation is crucial for Victoria’s economic development.

The Earth Resources Regulator Chief Inspector Michael Fitzgerald emphasised the regulator’s commitment to working with stakeholders to uphold stringent environmental standards while facilitating resource extraction essential for economic growth.

He highlighted the ongoing monitoring of the Keilor quarry to ensure compliance with the approved Work Plan, highlighting the regulator’s dedication to protecting public safety and the environment.

The Earth Resources Regulator plays a pivotal role in regulating Victorian mines, petroleum, and quarry sites to safeguard public safety and environmental integrity.

Through regular inspections and enforcement actions, the regulator ensures that activities are conducted safely and under regulatory requirements.

As Victoria continues to grow and develop, the Earth Resources Regulator remains steadfast in its commitment to balancing economic needs with environmental protection, ensuring sustainable resource extraction for the benefit of the state and its residents.
