Komatsu has marked a major milestone in autonomous mining, commissioning its 1,000th autonomous ultra-class haul truck equipped with its FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System.
The company, which launched the first commercial autonomous mining solution in 2008, is now the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to deploy 1,000 autonomous ultra-class trucks globally.
The latest unit (a Komatsu 930E-5AT with a 290-metric-tonne payload) has been commissioned at Barrick’s Nevada Gold Mines operation in the United States, extending Komatsu’s autonomous haulage capabilities into gold mining.
The 930E-5AT is part of Komatsu’s electric drive haul truck portfolio, which underpins FrontRunner deployments worldwide.
The 930E model is the most widely used in the company’s autonomous fleet, accounting for more than 500 units currently operating across customer sites.
Since its introduction, FrontRunner has supported the movement of more than 11.5 billion tonnes of material across mining operations in North America, South America, Australia and Europe.
The system has demonstrated consistent performance in challenging environments while contributing to both productivity gains and safety improvements.
Beyond haulage, Komatsu is expanding automation across broader mining operations.
This includes autonomous water trucks designed to improve road maintenance and reduce manual equipment interactions, as well as integrated fleet management systems that enable coordinated, mine-wide automation.
Komatsu’s autonomous technology is also delivering measurable social value.
In 2024, FrontRunner generated approximately US$2.4 billion in social impact globally, based on impact accounting methodologies developed by the Capitals Coalition and Value Balancing Alliance and analysed by ABeam Consulting, as reported in the Komatsu Report 2025.
The milestone follows another recent industry first: the autonomous operation of a power-agnostic electric drive truck connected to a dynamic trolley line, demonstrating the integration of automation with advanced electrification technologies.
“Commissioning our 1,000th autonomous haul truck is a defining moment for Komatsu and for the mining industry,” said Peter Salditt, President, Mining Business Division and CEO, Komatsu Mining Corporation.
“It reflects nearly two decades of innovation, collaboration with our customers and a relentless focus on creating real operational value.
“We are incredibly proud of this milestone, and even more excited about what lies ahead as we continue to advance autonomous, electrified and software-defined solutions that help our customers operate more safely, productively and sustainably.”
Customers remain central to the evolution of autonomous haulage, with partnerships helping expand the technology into new commodities and operating environments.
Komatsu’s collaboration with Barrick highlights the growing role of autonomy in improving both operational performance and workforce outcomes.
“FrontRunner has elevated both the quality of work for our people and the way we meet production goals at our Nevada operations,” said Mark Hill, President and CEO, Barrick.
“By transitioning operators away from haulage activities and enabling more predictable operations, autonomy supports safer, more skilled roles while helping us use energy more efficiently and reduce our environmental footprint.
“Together with Komatsu, we see a significant opportunity to advance productivity further while benefiting our workforce and community.”
Looking ahead, Komatsu is advancing a software-defined vehicle strategy aimed at creating adaptable, continuously improving mining equipment.
The company claims this unified platform will support evolving site conditions while helping customers meet rising demand for minerals with safer and more sustainable operations.
