Performance and maintenance of heavy equipment in the mining industry have always been critical challenges. Extreme conditions and demanding workloads lead to accelerated wear and tear, calling for effective maintenance solutions.
Downtime due to equipment failure can result in significant financial losses and disrupt production schedules. To mitigate these risks and optimise operations, mining companies are in constant search for alternatives to tackle these challenges, and the emergence of Enhanced Performance (EP™) Parts provides an innovative solution that promises a safer and more efficient future for the workforce.
Geographe: Pioneering Enhanced Performance Solutions
Geographe has been at the forefront of transforming mining performance through its Enhanced Performance (EP™) Parts for OEM fleets. These cutting-edge solutions have proven to significantly improve reliability, safety, and operational efficiency, addressing the challenges posed by underperforming equipment. Through close collaboration with clients’ asset optimisation and reliability engineering teams, Geographe has custom-engineered every product to tackle common equipment issues, ultimately enhancing productivity and profitability in surface mining activities.
Operating in the mining sector, where several factors affect equipment, Geographe understands the need to provide engineered parts that are tailored to the client’s needs to meet the specific demands of each mining operation.
“What we see as a significant issue in iron ore may not translate to a machine operating in coal,” affirms Matt McDonald, Geographe Sales Manager. “Machines have vastly different requirements due to the environment they work in. We consider this in all developments and actively engage our customers to help with the commercial viability of a product.”
Geographe high-performance products began with the creation of the first Solid Pin Kit for the CAT 992 loader, after which the company continued to design Enhanced Performance Parts to tackle a wide range of issues associated with seizure and failure of heavy mobile and fixed plant equipment. Over the years, these high-performing parts have been officially branded as EP™ or Enhanced Performance Parts. By listening to clients’ needs, Geographe has custom-designed more than 1,000 EP™ Parts through reverse engineering or bespoke design, to suit a cross-section of haul trucks, excavators, dozers, loaders, and many types of fixed plant assets.
The Benefits of Enhanced Performance Parts in Improving Mine Sites
EP™ parts bring an array of benefits to mining companies looking to enhance their operations. By integrating EP™ parts into their heavy mining equipment, companies can significantly extend the lifespan of critical components, reducing the frequency of replacements and repairs. The enhanced durability and resistance to wear and tear ensure that these parts perform optimally, leading to smoother operations and increased productivity.
A key advantage of EP™ Parts lies in their ability to reduce maintenance requirements. By withstanding the rigors of mining operations, these parts prolong the intervals between maintenance events, increasing equipment uptime and reducing downtime costs.
Supporting the Bottom Line: A Strategic Investment for Mining Companies
Geographe has always prioritised product evolution and improvement over imitation. To meet the individual needs of mine sites and support OH&S professionals to ensure the safety of the maintenance workforce, Geographe actively engages and collaborates with customers to ensure its parts not only solve their challenges but are also commercially viable and engineered to exceed expectations.
By adopting a solution-based approach that leverages Enhanced Performance (EP™) Parts, Geographe has been instrumental in helping mine sites overcome challenges and enhance safety and productivity, ultimately supporting the bottom line for mining companies.
As an ISO 9001 quality-certified company, Geographe uses an independent, climate-controlled inspection area where the temperature is monitored to be consistent 24 hours a day. All manufactured parts undergo rigorous statistical inspection within this environment against drawing specifications and process dependencies to ensure their accuracy and completeness. By leveraging traditional and cutting-edge digital measuring equipment with Bluetooth connectivity, Geographe automates inspection reports during part inspections for efficient, accurate reporting and absolute consistency.
To ensure traceability, Geographe has systems in place that provide an audit trail for the verification of materials used during manufacture and their origin, the product’s design details, and its full manufacture process. Each part manufactured by Geographe is labelled with a unique job number which logs these details related to the batch in which they were made.
This commitment to tailored solutions and product traceability sets Geographe apart in the mining industry.
Investing in Log-Term Cost Savings: The Impacts of EP™ Parts
In an industry where safety is paramount, every moment of downtime matters. Geographe’s EP™ Parts are engineered to deliver efficiency that extends beyond immediate gains. By addressing on-site challenges head-on, these parts provide higher-performing components that promote safer work practices and generate long-term cost savings. The impact of EP™ Parts on productivity and output translates to a direct positive influence on a mine operator’s bottom line, positioning them as a strategic investment for the future.
With a global footprint of over 82,000 installations in mining fleets, Geographe’s Enhanced Performance (EP™) Parts have left an enduring mark on mine site operations. By collaborating closely with clients and leveraging innovative materials and designs, Geographe parts consistently outperform original components, driving reduced downtime and significant cost savings.
One notable example is the Greaseable Hoist Pin modification engineered to suit Caterpillar Haul Trucks. A Global Gold Miner turned to Geographe to help resolve the issue of hoist pin seizure on their CAT 793D and F model Haul Truck fleet. Work on site was forced to stop whenever there was a pin seizure in the frame, and they were looking for a solution to this problem. Furthermore, the need for hot work upon pin removal added additional cost and safety concerns.
By adding detailed lubrication grooves and grease nipples that allow a grease line to be connected, this direct replacement for Pin 237-0417 now allows the part to be significantly lubricated. This modification helps increase the pin’s lifespan and eliminates the need for hot work upon removal. Geographe has since created full Hoist Pin Kits to suit the CAT 793 D and 793 F for easier servicing and extended its product line in this area to also suit Komatsu Haul Trucks.
The Hoist Pin Kits can be customised to your site requirements to include Nuts, Bolts, Washers, Clamps, Pad Assemblies, Bosses, Spacers, and Shims as well as the Modified Pin shown above.
Enhancing Safety and Efficiency in Mining Maintenance Operations
Geographe’s EP™ Parts have set a new standard for safeguarding mining personnel during maintenance operations. By eliminating the need for hazardous practices such as thermal lancing or hot works, these parts not only ensure optimal performance but also significantly reduce the risks associated with maintenance tasks. Moreover, EP™ Parts enable mining machines to surpass the required number of operating hours, leading to fewer maintenance events and increased equipment longevity. As a result, mine operators can not only reduce risk from their workforce but also realise substantial cost savings over time.
According to Innovation Project Manager Ryan Hyder, ‘We want to be in relationships with our customers that allow us to produce a product that is solution-based, solving safety and productivity issues, creating a safer environment for people to work in.’
The EP™ Collated Pin Assembly illustrates Geographe’s approach to safer maintenance practices when developing solutions for clients. The Komatsu 830E Hoist Cylinder Pins are susceptible to seizing which results in the need for hot work processes to lance out the pins, taking a single boilermaker between 5-8 hours to remove the 2-pins in one rear suspension cylinder. This results in prolonged fleet downtime and deviation from safe work practices, as a result, mine site maintenance teams and off-site repairers may experience fatigue or hearing loss from extreme noise pollution as well as potential injury from thermal lancing.
To solve this issue, Geographe developed a collated pin assembly (CPA) to suit the rear suspension & sway bar of the Komatsu 830E. Incorporating a tapered collet system, the CPA creates a self-wedging effect between the pin & frame bores, significantly reducing pin seizure and eliminating the need for hot works.
A Safer and More Efficient Future for Mining Workers
As the mining industry continues to evolve, the integration of Enhanced Performance Parts signifies progress towards a safer, more efficient, and sustainable future.
