Madeleine King has been reappointed as Federal Minister for Resources and Minister for Northern Australia following the re-election of the Albanese government.
The announcement comes as the government sharpens its focus on strengthening Australia’s resources sector, boosting economic resilience, and advancing its ‘Future Made in Australia’ agenda.
“I am honoured to be reappointed Federal Minister for Resources and Minister for Northern Australia as part of a re-elected Albanese Labor Government,” King said.
The federal government’s Future Made in Australia plan, backed by a $22.7 billion investment over the next decade, aims to position Australia as a renewable energy superpower and secure its place in a rapidly changing global economic landscape.
The plan prioritises attracting investment, value-adding to resources, and strengthening economic and national security.
A key element of the government’s agenda is the implementation of the Future Gas Strategy and the Critical Minerals Strategy, both considered vital for national productivity and security.
The government has announced the creation of a Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve, the expansion of the Critical Minerals Facility, and the introduction of Production Tax Credits.
These measures are designed to support the development of Australia’s critical minerals and rare earths sector, which is central to the nation’s economic, trade, and security interests.
King emphasised the importance of these initiatives, stating: “Strengthening our resources industry is a key priority of this government as a part of its Future Made in Australia agenda.”
She added: “The creation of a Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve, combined with Production Tax Credits and the expansion of the Critical Minerals Facility, will support Australia’s economy and boost our resilience in a time of global uncertainty.”
Northern Australia also remains a focus, with ongoing support for the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility aimed at creating jobs, building infrastructure, and supporting communities.
The government’s plan includes close collaboration with Special Envoy Luke Gosling and Assistant Ministers Senator Anthony Chisholm and Senator Nita Green to ensure the region’s growth and prosperity.
The resources industry, described as the “engine room of the economy,” is seen as increasingly important for Australia’s sovereignty and national security, particularly as critical minerals and rare earths become essential for the defence sector and international security partnerships such as AUKUS.
King concluded: “I am looking forward to implementing the Government’s election policies and to delivering for the people of Australia.”
