Newmont Corporation has announced the appointment of Harry M. “Red” Conger to its Board of Directors.
Conger, who brings over 46 years of extensive mining and leadership experience, will also serve on the company’s Safety and Sustainability Committee.
Conger recently retired from his position as President and Chief Operating Officer at Teck Resources.
His appointment to Newmont’s Board is expected to bring valuable operational insights and strategic expertise to the company.
Tom Palmer, Newmont’s President and CEO said: “We are pleased to welcome Red Conger to Newmont’s Board of Directors. Throughout his distinguished career, he has gained a wealth of unparalleled experience in the mining sector and strategic insights. Red brings significant operational leadership to Newmont’s Board.”
Prior to his role at Teck Resources, Conger held a prominent position at Freeport-McMoRan, where he served as President and Chief Operating Officer for the Americas division.
His career in mining began at Kennecott Copper’s Bingham Canyon mine, followed by more than two decades at Phelps Dodge Corporation.
During his tenure at Phelps Dodge, Conger oversaw mining and processing operations across multiple sites in North and South America.
Throughout his career, Conger has demonstrated a strong ability to create operational efficiencies and maintain stable production, even during challenging industry cycles.
His expertise is expected to be particularly valuable as Newmont navigates the complex landscape of global mining operations.
Beyond his corporate roles, Conger has been an active leader in the broader mining industry.
He previously served as Chairman of the National Mining Association and as Commissioner of the New Mexico Mining Commission.
His contributions to the field have been widely recognised, culminating in his recent election to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering.
Conger’s appointment to Newmont’s Board of Directors comes at a time when the mining industry faces increasing challenges related to sustainability and operational efficiency.
His extensive experience and industry recognition are likely to prove instrumental in guiding Newmont’s strategic decisions and enhancing its position in the global mining sector.
