Newmont Corporation announced that its Cadia operation in Orange, New South Wales, Australia, has been awarded The Copper Mark and The Molybdenum Mark, recognising the site’s commitment to responsible production practices.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for Newmont, as Cadia becomes the company’s first site globally to receive these prestigious awards.
The Cadia mine, Australia’s largest underground mining operation, successfully met over 30 rigorous criteria in critical areas including environmental stewardship, community engagement, human rights, and governance.
This comprehensive assessment underscores Newmont’s dedication to sustainable and ethical mining practices.
Suzy Retallack, Newmont’s Chief Safety and Sustainability Officer, emphasised the importance of responsible mining in meeting the growing global demand for copper.
She stated: “We take great pride in being at the forefront of the copper industry with The Copper Mark, which highlights our dedication to responsible production and transparency.”
The achievement is particularly noteworthy as Cadia is Australia’s second-largest copper producer and the third site in the country to receive The Copper Mark.
Moreover, as the only operating mine producing molybdenum in Australia, Cadia has become the first and only recipient of The Molybdenum Mark in the nation.
Cadia’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond these certifications.
In 2020, the operation entered into a 15-year renewable Power Purchase Agreement with Tilt Renewables Limited, which now supplies approximately half of Cadia’s power needs from the Rye Park wind farm.
This initiative demonstrates Newmont’s proactive approach to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing renewable energy sources.
The mine’s positive impact on the local community is evident through its substantial investments.
In the 18 months leading up to December 2023, Cadia invested nearly 6 million Australian dollars in community projects, education, and infrastructure.
Michèle Brülhart, Executive Director of The Copper Mark, congratulated the Cadia team on their achievement, noting that with this certification, about 35 per cent of Australia’s copper is now produced at sites that have obtained The Copper Mark.
The Copper Mark stands as the leading assurance framework promoting responsible, sustainable, and ethical practices across the copper, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc value chains.
This recognition not only enhances Newmont’s reputation but also provides assurance to global customers seeking sustainably sourced copper concentrate.
Located approximately 25 kilometres south-southwest of Orange in Central West New South Wales and 250 kilometres west of Sydney, the Cadia operation includes the Cadia East underground mine, one of the world’s largest gold and copper deposits, and the Ridgeway Underground Mine — which is currently in care and maintenance.
This achievement by Newmont’s Cadia operation sets a new benchmark for responsible mining practices in Australia and reinforces the company’s position as a leader in sustainable resource extraction.
