The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) has extended its congratulations to David Crisafulli and the Liberal National Party (LNP) following their victory in the Queensland state election.
QRC Chief Executive Officer Janette Hewson expressed optimism about working with the incoming government to strengthen the state’s resources sector.
Premier-elect Crisafulli’s vision to establish Queensland as an economic powerhouse aligns with the QRC’s goals for the industry.
The resources sector, which contributed $117 billion to the state economy and supported over 530,000 jobs last year, is poised to play a crucial role in this vision.
The QRC welcomed several LNP commitments, including:
- Establishing a Resources Cabinet Sub-Committee to improve cross-government consultation on policies affecting the sector
- Reestablishing the Productivity Commission
- Ensuring reliable electricity supply during the energy transition
- Providing $2 million in funding to boost regional skills training through the QRC’s educational arm, QMEA
- Allocating $500,000 to attract more women to the resources sector workforce
Hewson emphasised the need for supportive government policies to maintain Queensland’s attractiveness for investment.
She highlighted the importance of a fair royalty system and streamlined approvals for new projects across all commodities, including critical minerals.
The QRC also advocated for a fairer distribution of benefits to regional Queensland, where support for the LNP was strong.
This includes improved infrastructure, roads, and services like healthcare.
As the new government prepares to take office, the QRC looks forward to engaging on its 2024 Election Priorities.
These priorities focus on enhancing competitiveness, ensuring fairer returns for regions, developing skills, and establishing an appropriate energy mix for the state.
The resources industry stands ready to collaborate with Premier Crisafulli and his team to solidify Queensland’s position as a global leader in responsible resource development.
