Weld Australia has announced the establishment of a new local presence in South Australia, reinforcing its commitment to support and advocate for the state’s welding and manufacturing industries.
The organisation has appointed Ben Mitchell as Executive General Manager, of Strategic Partnerships, to lead its initiatives in Adelaide.
South Australia’s manufacturing sector plays a crucial role in the state’s economy, contributing approximately 17 per cent of total output by revenue, 20 per cent of exports, and 7 per cent of employment.
The state is embracing sovereign manufacturing within a low-carbon, clean industrial future, particularly through the State Prosperity Project.
Geoff Crittenden, CEO of Weld Australia, highlighted the importance of South Australia’s manufacturing sector, noting the state’s significant progress in renewable energy and its role in major defence projects.
“South Australia’s renewable energy share has surged from 1 per cent in 2007 to 74 per cent in 2023. The state is also home to Australia’s richest copper resource and will be central to delivering some of the largest and most complex defence projects ever undertaken in Australia,” Crittenden stated.
Ben Mitchell brings over 20 years of experience in marketing, strategy, leadership, and innovation across various commercial sectors.
His background includes key roles at K-TIG and Nitto Denko, where he was instrumental in driving strategic initiatives and organisational transformation.
Commenting on his new role, Mitchell said, “I am thrilled to join Weld Australia and lead our efforts in South Australia. This state is at the forefront of a transformative period in manufacturing, renewables and defence. I look forward to collaborating with local industries to harness these opportunities and drive sustainable growth”.
Weld Australia’s expansion into South Australia aligns with its mission to ensure the competitiveness of the Australian welding industry.
The organisation plans to work closely with government, industry, unions, and education providers to address skills shortages and promote careers in welding.
This strategic move by Weld Australia comes at a time when South Australia is strengthening its ties with international partners in the manufacturing and defence sectors.
Recently, the state government announced a new program with America’s largest shipbuilder to help South Australian companies enter the global supply chain for nuclear-powered submarines.
With its new local presence, Weld Australia aims to provide more immediate support, foster closer relationships with local industry stakeholders, and actively participate in the development of policies that will benefit the South Australian economy.
