Prairie Lithium has announced that construction of its commercial-scale direct lithium extraction (DLE) facility in Saskatchewan, Canada, is nearing completion.
The building interior is scheduled for finalisation in the second quarter of 2026, which will pave the way for equipment installation throughout the second and third quarters. This progress puts the company firmly on track to begin commissioning the plant in the fourth quarter of 2026, marking a significant step toward becoming a key North American lithium brine producer.
This work follows the successful completion of essential enabling infrastructure, including the drilling of production and disposal wells, as well as the installation of dedicated powerlines and transformers.
Prairie Lithium Managing Director, Paul Lloyd, said: “This update marks a critical step as we execute the construction that prepares us for commissioning and first production.”
A key feature of Prairie Lithium’s development strategy is the mitigation of project risk through a binding offtake agreement with South Korea’s Hydro Lithium.
Under this deal, 100 per cent of Phase 1 production, totalling 150 tonnes per annum of Lithium Carbonate Equivalent (LCE), is already secured.
Furthermore, Hydro Lithium is providing approximately AU$10 million in proprietary refining equipment, a contribution that significantly reduces upfront capital requirements for the company.
By processing the lithium into battery-grade material for Asian markets, Prairie Lithium aims to support the diversification of global supply chains at a time of surging demand for electric vehicle and energy storage technologies.
The project’s location in Saskatchewan provides a competitive advantage, offering access to established industrial infrastructure and a mining-friendly regulatory environment.
“We believe Prairie Lithium is well positioned to become one of the first lithium brine producers in North America, supplying a rapidly growing global market,” Lloyd said.
“Beyond Phase 1, our scalable strategy provides a clear pathway to expand production and deliver long term value.”
Looking ahead, the company plans to use Phase 1 as a commercial-scale proof of concept. Its scalable pad-by-pad development model provides a clear pathway for potential expansion beyond initial production targets.
