Australian technology company GeoMoby is making waves in the mining industry with its innovative real-time location tracking system, which could prove crucial in protecting workers during potential cyberattacks on mine sites and plant operations.
The company’s founder, Chris Baudia, recently observed a simulated cyberattack at the Surface Mine Emergency Response Competition (SMERC) near Coolgardie, Western Australia.
The simulation highlighted the vulnerabilities of traditional communication methods in emergency situations.
“If criminals take over the computer systems that run a processing operation, it can be extremely dangerous for mine workers,” Baudia explained.
He noted that in scenarios where workers are incapacitated by hazards like poisonous gas, conventional radio systems become ineffective.
GeoMoby’s technology offers a solution by tracking workers in real time, potentially saving crucial minutes in emergency responses.
“GeoMoby would have found team members immediately, and a faster rescue could limit cyanide poisoning, in this test case scenario,” Baudia stated.
The company’s geolocation technology, which runs on Bluetooth, could serve as a vital backup system during cyberattacks.
This feature allows mine operators to instantly locate and visualise the positions of all on-site staff, even if primary communication systems are compromised.
Recent cyberattacks on mining companies have underscored the growing threat to the industry.
Notable incidents include data leaks at Rio Tinto and Alamos Gold, a ransomware attack on Copper Mountain Mining Corporation, and attempted breaches at Iluka Resources and Northern Minerals.
GeoMoby‘s technology offers more than just emergency response capabilities.
The company’s platform integrates with various IoT sensors, including environmental monitoring systems, portable gas sensors, and smartwatches, providing comprehensive real-time data on worker safety and environmental conditions.
Mathieu Paul, a director at GeoMoby, revealed that the company has secured significant contracts with global miners in recent months.
“We look forward to announcing the specific projects shortly,” he said — hinting at the growing industry recognition of GeoMoby’s innovative solutions.
As mining companies increasingly prioritise worker safety and cybersecurity, GeoMoby’s real-time tracking technology stands poised to set new industry standards, ensuring miners can return home safely every day.
