Applications are now open for the highly competitive 2026 Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA) PhD Scholarships, with each award valued at over $41,000 per year, plus additional research and travel allowances.
Launched by Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael, this annual program supports innovative research related to the technical, economic, environmental and social aspects of mining across Western Australia’s universities.
Four scholarships will be offered in the upcoming round: the MRIWA Odwyn Jones PhD Scholarship, MRIWA PhD Scholarship for Women, the general MRIWA PhD Scholarship, and the MRIWA Indigenous Postgraduate Research Scholarship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students undertaking higher degree research.
“The Cook government is committed to supporting the growth and the diversity of WA’s research workforce,” Minister Michael stated.
“MRIWA scholarships provide a unique opportunity for researchers to connect with industry, academia and government.
“Successful applicants will join the current 22 MRIWA PhD Scholarship recipients in this specialised program developed to support their careers.”
The MRIWA scholarships, administered through the Institute’s Education and Workforce Program, provide more than financial support.
Recipients receive an annual stipend exceeding $41,000, a research and travel allowance of over $5,900, and access to a suite of training and networking opportunities.
These include development in research innovation, professional presentation, and establishing networks with integrated industry and academic communities.
Students in the program benefit from strong industry engagement and opportunities to showcase research at high-profile platforms such as the MRIWA Research Showcase.
The goal is to advance practical solutions, supporting Western Australia’s position as a leader in mining innovation and sustainability.
Minister Michael highlighted the tangible outcomes for scholars: “Through their engagement with MRIWA, scholars gain valuable skills, expand their professional networks and continue to address the unique research challenges faced in the WA minerals sector, as well as joining a growing cohort of MRIWA-supported researchers.”
Applications are encouraged from candidates pursuing research advancing the minerals sector’s environmental performance, operational efficiency, waste transformation, and future workforce development.
Applications close 30 September 2025.
