On 30 September, Fortescue Metals Group announced that a significant incident at the Solomon Hub mining operations in Western Australia resulted in a worker fatality.
The incident occurred when there was a collapse of ground and Fortescue is working closely with all relevant authorities.
Site operations at Solomon are suspended, pending a full investigation into the incident. Fortescue is working closely with the WA Police and WA Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety.
Fortescue Chief Executive Officer Elizabeth Gaines expressed the company’s deepest sympathy to team member’s family, friends and colleagues.
“This is a very sad day for Fortescue and all our thoughts are with his family as we provide our full support to them at this very difficult time.
Ms Gaines said the safety and wellbeing of the company’s team members is of highest priority and ensures that support is being provided to employees and contractors.
“The wellbeing of the entire Fortescue family is our priority with a range of support services available across our sites, including the Fortescue Chaplains and Employee Assistance Program,” Ms Gaines said.
The Minerals Council of Australia said it is deeply saddened by the tragic death of a worker at the Solomon Hub iron ore mine in the Pilbara.
“Our thoughts go to the worker’s family, friends and colleagues, as well as the emergency responders and mine safety inspectors,” said Chief Executive Officer Tania Constable.
“The minerals industry’s highest value and priority is the safety and health of its workforce.
“The MCA will continue to assist the commitment of its members and the broader mining sector to an industry free of fatalities, injuries and industrial diseases.”
