Mendiger Basalt Schmitz Naturstein GmbH & Co. KG has recently chosen to upgrade its operations with the Epiroc HB 7000 hydraulic breaker. This decision reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and sustainability at its basalt quarry in the scenic Eifel region of Germany.
Having relied on Epiroc hydraulic breakers for primary breaking since 2012, Mendiger Basalt’s transition to the HB 7000 marks a significant advancement in its equipment lineup.
The new HB 7000 hydraulic breaker is outfitted with the HATCON fleet management system, which aims to further streamline Mendiger Basalt’s operations. A notable aspect of this upgrade is Mendiger Basalt’s adoption of a full-service rental agreement for the first time. This comprehensive agreement covers not just equipment maintenance, but also wear parts and consumables, ensuring optimal performance and minimal downtime.
Known for their robustness and efficiency, the Epiroc HB series hydraulic breakers are designed for tough operations like primary breaking in quarries. Specifically engineered for maximum performance and durability, these breakers excel in extracting and crushing basalt — an extremely hard volcanic rock. Features like the Intelligent Protection System (IPS) and AutoControl system ensure optimal efficiency and safety, even in challenging conditions.
The use of excavator attachments, such as hydraulic breakers, offers several advantages over traditional drilling and blasting methods. These include lower noise levels, reduced environmental impact, enhanced workplace safety, and the ability to operate near residential areas. Additionally, hydraulic tools enable the extraction of high-quality material directly and precisely, even in heterogeneous rock formations.
The handover of the breaker was facilitated by Epiroc Business Partner A.B.T. Abbruchtechnik GmbH, a trusted name with expertise in handling Epiroc attachments, particularly in heavy-duty applications. Rental costs are calculated based on actual operating hours recorded by the HATCON system, providing both companies with optimal planning security and reliability.
