Lotus Resources Ltd. has resumed acid production and uranium processing operations at its Kayelekera uranium mine in Malawi following the successful completion of furnace repairs.
Processing activities at the site were temporarily suspended in June after third-party acid supply was disrupted and commissioning of the mine’s on-site acid plant was delayed by a partial failure of refractory bricks in the sulphur furnace.
Lotus confirmed that interim repair works on the furnace are now complete. With third-party acid supplies replenished and raw sulphur inventories secured on-site, both the acid plant and the main uranium processing facility have recommenced operations.
Lotus Managing Director Greg Bittar said the operational pause allowed site personnel to execute critical maintenance and progress plant optimisation initiatives ahead of full production ramping up.
“We are very pleased to see the restart of processing and with this, the drumming of uranium to follow shortly,” Bittar said.
“Whilst production was paused, the team continued to execute the processing optimisation plan, as well as completing critical maintenance, which will support the plant reaching steady state levels.”
The re-commissioning of the acid plant represents an operational milestone for the Kayelekera project. By producing acid on-site, Lotus expects to secure a reliable supply of key reagents while significantly lowering overall operating costs.
With sufficient sulphur stockpiled at Kayelekera and clear supply chain visibility for the remainder of calendar year 2026, the company is preparing to recommence yellowcake drumming in the coming weeks as it works toward achieving steady-state processing levels.
