Dr James Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of Geoscience Australia, has announced his retirement after leading the organisation since April 2017.
The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has issued a statement commending Dr Johnson for his service and leadership.
During his tenure, Dr Johnson played a pivotal role in strengthening Geoscience Australia, particularly through the implementation of the $225 million Exploring for the Future program.
Under his guidance, mineral exploration expenditure in Australia reached a record high of $4.2 billion in 2023.
Dr Johnson’s career spans over 30 years in geology, including experience in private-sector mining and mineral exploration.
He first joined Geoscience Australia in 2006, holding various leadership positions before becoming CEO.
Tania Constable, Chief Executive Officer of the MCA, highlighted Dr Johnson’s contributions to the minerals industry, noting that exploration is crucial for the sector’s future.
The Exploring for the Future program has been instrumental in revealing Australia’s potential for minerals, energy, and groundwater resources.
The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) also acknowledged Dr Johnson’s leadership since 2017, praising his efforts in promoting critical minerals exploration and development.
During his time as CEO, Dr Johnson focused on unity in deploying geoscience for Australia’s economic, social, and environmental benefit.
He also drove initiatives to engage with Aboriginal Australia and was recognised as the 2021 AHRI CEO Diversity Champion.
Dr Johnson’s retirement marks the end of a significant era for Geoscience Australia, leaving a legacy of innovation, inclusiveness, and substantial contributions to Australia’s resources sector.
