Atlas Iron has confirmed progress on Stage 2 of its Sanjiv Ridge Project, located in the iron-rich Pilbara region of Western Australia.
The new development, situated approximately 241 kilometres south-east of Port Hedland in the Shire of East Pilbara, marks the next phase in Atlas Iron’s operations at the Sanjiv Ridge site.
Stage 2 of the project will involve above-water-table mining of approximately 10 million tonnes (Mt) of iron ore from the Glen Herring deposit, located about three kilometres west of the Stage 1 site.
The company’s proposal outlines the development of three new pits (Glen Herring, Dazzler, and Hero) along with four associated waste rock dumps and a four-kilometre haul road linking the new operation to the existing Stage 1 infrastructure.
The new haul road will serve as the critical transport link between Stage 2 and Stage 1, where extracted ore will be processed and managed under existing operational systems.
The integration is designed to maintain efficiency, minimise environmental footprint, and reduce the need for new infrastructure investment.
The Stage 2 proposal includes clearing up to 125 hectares of vegetation within a broader development envelope of approximately 246 hectares.
However, the company has indicated that no additional groundwater abstraction will be required for this stage.
Water for site activities, including dust suppression and operational use, will continue to be sourced from Stage 1 facilities; drawing on existing supply and management systems already approved under previous environmental assessments.
The project has been formally assessed by the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) under Section 38 of the Environmental Protection Act 1986, with the proposal listed under Assessment Number 2313.
This project has received government approval for Atlas Iron to proceed under defined environmental conditions.
Atlas Iron’s documentation emphasises that there are no changes to the proposal as initially referred to the EPA, reaffirming the company’s plan to adhere to its previously submitted environmental commitments and operating framework.
The project remains classified within the iron ore sector, one of Western Australia’s cornerstone industries and a key driver of the state’s export economy.
The Glen Herring and associated pit developments form part of Atlas Iron’s broader strategy to sustain production capacity across its Pilbara operations, leveraging satellite deposits to extend the life of existing infrastructure and deliver consistent output.
